As the season builds momentum, St. Malachy’s PYB team is gearing up for action. Current games are slated for Saturday mornings at 9:15 a.m. and 11:15 a.m., hosted at the Alan Horwitz “Sixth Man” Center in Nicetown—a state-of-the-art PYB facility with seven courts, classrooms, and wellness resources.

Practices occur twice weekly after school, blending drills, scrimmages, and life-skills sessions led by Coach Norman and her team. Schedules are subject to adjustments as the season intensifies, with potential additions of weekday scrimmages and tournaments through spring 2026. This partnership isn’t just about wins—it’s about creating pathways.

I’d also like to thank Coach Hope Norman, PYB’s dedicated Coach-Mentor. A passionate advocate for youth empowerment, Norman has been instrumental in building St. Malachy’s team.  I’ve firsthand seen that her approach goes beyond X’s and O’s; she fosters emotional growth, resilience, and leadership among her players.

Lace up—North Philly’s future is shooting for the stars.

The Vital Role of Sports in Middle School Development

Participation in middle school sports like basketball offers profound, evidence-based benefits during a pivotal developmental stage. Research shows that team activities enhance academic performance by improving focus, time management, and discipline—skills that translate directly to the classroom. They also promote physical health, reducing risks of obesity and boosting mental well-being through endorphin release and stress relief. Socially, sports cultivate teamwork, empathy, and a sense of belonging, helping adolescents navigate peer pressures and build lasting friendships. At St. Malachy’s, we are engaging in athletics and fostering these elements, creating a supportive buffer against the challenges of puberty and academic demands, setting the stage for high school success.
